Temper. Temper. I lost it this week. As a general rule, I get aggravated (a lot) but not angry. And Im usually over it within minutes. So imagine my dismay when I completely lost it. The whole shebang - hands shaking, voice waivering, tears forming anger. It takes a lot to get me there and I really, really hate the emotion and its subsequent behavior. So for anyone that I have personally angered or to anyone that my anger was directed towards, Im sincerely sorry. I wish that I could say with confidence that it will never happen again but we probably do not want to compound the error by lying as well. I have my triggers - my stressors - my buttons to push and normally recognizing them helps but sometimes….. Sometimes the beast is unleashed. Uuuuhhhhhgguuuhhhllllleeee.
Ok. So we cannot help it. Sometimes we simply get angry. Is it ok to get angry? Ever? The Bible tells us that Jesus got angry when he went into the temple and began overthrowing tables. His house was a house of prayer and the people were turning it into an enterprise. (Yes, I know that is a loose translation). But the point is - Jesus never did any wrong, so anger is not wrong, right? Well, yes and no. Jesus’s anger served God. Does yours? Does mine? A pastor once said “May God deliver you from the sting of your anger but not the protection of it.” So what I have come to understand is this… anger in its right purpose (to serve God) is acceptable; anger because someone hurt our feelings is not. Take your anger to God. Listen to him. He will soothe the beast from within and direct you on the right path. He will show you when to anger and when to calm. He is always ready to lead us. Sometimes we are not ready (or willing) to listen. Be ready.
